NEW SHOW: “Savor San Diego” with Su-Mei Yu
Saffron’s iconic Thai chef tapped for new TV show

If Thai food in San Diego has a face, it’s her serene one. Su-Mei Yu, chef-owner of Saffron, announced today she’ll launch a TV show called Savor San Diego on KPBS come next May. Seems there were 52 show idea submissions for the PBS affiliate’s Explore San Diego Project. Yu’s idea to dive into the culture of local farms, seafood and food craftmakers came out on top. She’ll pull on the boots at SD’s fishing docks, and tell you what to do with the bounty on your stove once it’s hooked. She’ll trudge along with ranchers, explore our food-animal system. She’ll mason jar with DIY foodstuffers. And, of course, an on-location cooking segment will bolster each show—whether schooner grilling or barbecuing among the cowpies. Savor San Diego’s been green-lit for six half-hour episodes (Thursday nights and Saturday days). Yu’s no stranger to TV, having cooked on Martha Stewart, Food Network, The Today Show, you name it. She’s open to pitches, and looking for sponsors. She’s also written three cookbooks, and the recipe for panang curry from Elements of Life will make dinner guests love you more.
