Su-Mei Yu on TV
The grande dame of San Diego’s slow food movement is coming out of the kitchen at Saffron

The grande dame of San Diego’s slow food movement, and generally one of the most loved chefs in the region, is coming out of the kitchen at Saffron to host a new series on KPBS TV. Her pilot was selected from 52 entries submitted to the station’s call for of new shows. The first six episodes of Savor San Diego will begin airing this spring. Yu fills us in.

How did the show happen? People have talked of me doing my own show for a while and then this call to submit ideas came about.

What was the most interesting person or place you filmed? I believe everyone we picked to be in our shows will be quite a character and most interesting—hidden jewels, just like the ingredients they catch or grow.

Is it odd to see yourself on TV, or did it come naturally to you? It is always odd to see myself on the show and interesting how old I am getting every minute.

What other cooking or chef shows do you watch? I don’t seem to have the time to watch television, let alone cooking shows. Too tired and always ready for bed!
